Campus shop provides laundry service for students

Part of going away to college is having the full college experience – laundry and all. But for students at Elon College in the late 1970s and early 1980s, this often-dreaded task of laundry was made a little easier.

According to the 1975-1976 Elon Student Handbook, this was the first year the school offered a linen service for students. The service was offered through the Campus Shop, which was located in the Long Building. The last academic year the service was offered was in 1984-1985. Section 29 of the 1984-1985 Student Handbook stated: “Linen service – A commercial laundry organization makes linen and towel service available to students through the Campus Shop.”

Today, Elon students are not allowed to splash or wade in Fonville Fountain after receiving their diplomas during commencement, but in the 1980s, this was a well-embraced Elon tradition on commencement. Continue reading
